Joshua5:13-15 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, "Are you for us or for our enemies?"
"Neither," he replied, "but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come." Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, "What message does my Lord have for his servant?"
The commander of the LORD's army replied, "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy." And Joshua did so.
This is a cool connection again to Moses. No doubt this was God(Jesus)…the same words spoken from the burning bush, were spoken by the Commander of the Lords Army.
Was this Jesus?
I tend to think it was…and the fact that he stood before Joshua in ‘human form’ and requires submission by Joshua lets me know this wasn’t merely an angel.
Joshua correctly submitted himself (and Israel) and bowed down to him…once he recognized it was the Lord. Israel has to submit to the Lord before they were to conquer anything or anyone in the Promised Land. Much like us….we’ll take the ‘Promised Land’ but in order to live a life for him now…we need to submit ourselves to Him. This is the process of Lordship or surrender.
I know in my own life…I had to wander in the desert in order to get me to the place where I would surrender. I always had the ‘Promised Land’ but needed guidance from the Commander of the Lords Army…. We learned in a previous chapter…that whether it takes a moment or 40 years….God is preparing and shaping us.
