“As was custom in the Old Testament….let us stand for the reading of God’s word!” I always wondered where my old pastor used to get this from.
5 Ezra opened the book. All the people could see him because he was standing above them; and as he opened it, the people all stood up. 6 Ezra praised the LORD, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, "Amen! Amen!" Then they bowed down and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.
The word of God was due honor…and attention. As a servant would rise in respect to his master….he would also stand at the ready…..in case of instruction. This is why the people stood when Ezra opened the word of God.
We generally reserve worship for singing…these people worshipped at the reading of God’s word.
