In 2 Samuel 23, there is a list of the ‘Mighty Men’ of David. I think it is significant from the perspective that David was a great leader, but he also assembled a great support system. These men listed are the men that stood beside David BEFORE he was king…..after Samuel had anointed him, but before Saul was removed from the throne.
Remember this was a very tough time…..thus making these men even more ‘Mighty’.
These are the men that worked behind the scenes, with little or no recognition. Yeah they got a mention here at the end of 2 Samuel, but never received the accolades or were rewarded for their actions.
There is such a great correlation between being a Mighty Man of David and church work. Church leaders and workers, roll up their sleeves every day, go to battle, teach a class, stack a chair, load a trailer, fold a bulletin, change a diaper, set up pipe and drape…and not too many people are going to notice. But God does.
These men who served David, may have never been noticed by a single person…..but God recorded them in His Holy Word.
God, I want to be a Mighty Man. Give us the strength and courage to do your work. Give us eternal perspective and make us see the ‘bigger picture’. It’s not about us…..may you be glorified!
